Custard King first opened for business in downtown Astoria, Oregon in 1951. Over the years, Custard King became a place where area residents and tourists could hang out and enjoy burgers, fries, frozen custard and FUN!

In 2011 Portland resident and Alternative Mornings (94.7FM) radio host Greg Glover and his wife Alana Jevert-Glover became part-time Astoria residents, renting an apartment downtown. Then, in September 2012, they started a weekends-only business venture, Commercial Astoria (1269 Commercial Street). The small shop features new and vintage clothing, gifts, accessories and both new and used records. Part of their weekend routine always included taking their dog, Biscuit, to Custard King for a burger. "He loved those kiddie burgers, so in a way Biscuit is responsible for this whole thing," jokes Glover.

Opening hours at Custard King became sporadic and a 'For Sale' sign loomed in the window. Glover says that former owners Paul and Susan Brost would often urge him to buy the business, since he was such a regular customer. Glover knew Biscuit would certainly like that, but had no idea how to make it work.

Glover's friend, Laughing Planet CEO, Franz Spielvogel, knows a bit about the restaurant business. Laughing Planet has 17 locations in Oregon and Nevada which serve healthy burritos, bowls, salads, smoothies and more.

In April 2015, Glover and Spielvogel, along with their business partner, David Demmers, took the plunge and bought Custard King. That's when the doors were shut and the planning and renovations began.

One big change they made was with the menu. They wanted to use fresher, more local ingredients. They have added Tillamook cheeses, and buns made fresh by Home Bakery. In addition, Custard King now also offers a kale salad, sweet potato fries, veggie burgers and, of course, frozen custard.

"We're grateful for our new team which includes top notch manager Jeff Weaver who is passionate, talented and cares a great deal about the community. We're also proud to have restored what we feel is a local landmark business," says Spielvogel.

All hail the return of Custard King!
